How fractional CTO fees work
A fractional CTO fee is a monthly retainer, an hourly rate, or a project price. Use these published figures to budget before you sign.
Updated . Every dollar figure links to the public page that published it.
A fractional CTO charges a monthly retainer, an hourly rate, or a fixed project fee. The price follows the hours you buy, the work you hand over, and how fast you need it. Go Fractional states $9,000 to $15,000 a month for 15 hours a week. Fractional Jobs states a median of $208 an hour in posted CTO roles. Fraction prices a two-week Tech Teardown at $7,500. To budget from an hourly rate, multiply the rate by the hours you need each week, then by 52, then divide by 12. Check what sits inside the fee before you sign.
The short answer
A fractional CTO fee is a retainer, an hourly rate, or a project price. Pick the shape that matches the job, then judge the number.
| Model | How it works | Fits when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retainer | A set fee for set hours each month | You want technology owned every month | Unused hours do not roll forward |
| Hourly | You pay for the hours you use | The work is light or uneven | Each call is a charge |
| Project | One fee for one deliverable | The job has a clear end | Extra work costs extra |
Fractional Jobs states that 42% of fractional engineering professionals bill by the hour and 28% bill on a monthly retainer. Engineering is the seat where hourly shows up more. Use a retainer when you want an owner every month anyway.
What a fractional CTO costs
Published pages put a monthly retainer in the thousands, an hourly rate beside it, and one teardown at a fixed fee.
| What was measured | Figure | Where it is published |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer at 15 hours a week | $9,000 to $15,000 a month | Go Fractional |
| Pre-product monthly retainer | $5,000 to $10,000 a month | Fractional Pulse |
| Post-launch, $1 million to $5 million in annual revenue | $8,000 to $15,000 a month | Fractional Pulse |
| Above $5 million in annual revenue | $12,000 to $22,000 a month | Fractional Pulse |
| Posted hourly median for CTO roles | $208 an hour | Fractional Jobs |
| Middle half of posted engineering leadership rates | $188 to $225 an hour | Fractional Jobs |
| Average hourly rate | $208 an hour average; $200 an hour median; middle half $150 to $250 an hour | Go Fractional |
| Two-week Tech Teardown | $7,500 | Fraction |
Read the label on each row. Fractional Jobs states a posted median of $208 an hour and a middle half of $188 to $225 an hour for engineering leadership. Go Fractional states an average of $208 an hour, a median of $200 an hour, and a middle half of $150 to $250 an hour. Fraction prices one teardown at $7,500.
How to turn a rate into a monthly budget
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you need each week, then by 52, then divide by 12. That month is the budget you compare with a retainer.
Fractional Jobs states that 10 hours a week at $208 an hour comes to $108,160 a year, or $9,013 a month. Put your own hours into the same steps.
Go Fractional multiplies 15 hours a week by 4 weeks and by its $208 average. It states that month as $12,400. The same page states the 15-hour band as $9,000 to $15,000. Use your hours, then set the result beside the retainer in the quote.
What pushes the fee up or down
Stage, team size, and the kind of technical work move the fee. Match the quote to your stage first.
Fractional Pulse states $5,000 to $10,000 a month at the pre-product stage. It states $8,000 to $15,000 a month after launch, from $1 million to $5 million in annual revenue. It states $12,000 to $22,000 a month above $5 million in annual revenue. Leading a larger team adds hours. Security and compliance work add scope. Building the product costs more time than overseeing a team that already builds it.
Fractional Pulse states that the first 30 to 60 days are heavy assessment work, then the work shifts toward oversight. Budget the opening months at the high end of the hours you agreed.
Retainer, hourly, or project
Use a retainer when technology needs an owner every month. Use hourly when the need is a build spike or uneven questions. Use a project when the output has an end date.
A retainer buys the seat: set hours, set decisions, a set month. Ask whether unused hours roll forward. Hourly fits a sprint that then goes quiet. The meter runs, so write a monthly cap. A project fits a bounded review. Fraction prices a two-week Tech Teardown at $7,500. Write the deliverable, the end date, and how a change is priced.
Use The first call with a fractional exec: seven questions to test hours, who does the work, and how the fee ends.
What to put in the contract
Write six items into the contract: the work, the hours, the notice period, who owns the code, who owns the cloud accounts, and which expenses you pay.
The work list names the decisions and the deliverables. The hours name days or hours each month, and what happens when a month runs over. The notice period names how either side ends it. The code and the cloud accounts stay with the company. Say that in the contract, and say who the admins are on exit. The expenses clause names travel, software, and specialist audits.
If a line is missing, the fee is not done. Ask for the line before you sign.
Questions to ask about price
Ask these five questions before you sign. A clear fee has a clear answer to each one.
- What work is inside the fee, and what work is outside it?
- What happens to hours you do not use?
- How many days of notice end the contract?
- Who owns the code and the cloud accounts?
- What change in the work changes the fee?
Write the answers into the contract. A quote without those answers is a starting number, not a deal.
FAQ
How much does a fractional CTO cost per month?
Go Fractional states $9,000 to $15,000 a month for 15 hours a week. Fractional Pulse states $5,000 to $10,000 a month at the pre-product stage. It states $8,000 to $15,000 a month from $1 million to $5 million in annual revenue. It states $12,000 to $22,000 a month above $5 million in annual revenue.
What is the hourly rate for a fractional CTO?
Fractional Jobs states a median of $208 an hour in posted CTO roles. The middle half of its posted engineering leadership rates is $188 to $225 an hour. Go Fractional states an average of $208 an hour and a median of $200 an hour. The middle half of its rates runs from $150 to $250 an hour.
Retainer or hourly: which is better?
Use a retainer when you want technology ownership every month. Use hourly when the work spikes and then goes quiet. Fractional Jobs states that 42% of fractional engineering professionals bill by the hour and 28% bill on a retainer. Hourly makes each call a charge.
Can I hire a fractional CTO for a one-time project?
Yes. Buy one deliverable with an end date. Fraction prices a two-week Tech Teardown at $7,500. Write what “done” means, and write how a change is priced.
Why do fractional CTO quotes vary so much?
Stage, team size, and the kind of work set the price. Fractional Pulse states $5,000 to $10,000 a month before a product. It states $8,000 to $15,000 a month from $1 million to $5 million in annual revenue. It states $12,000 to $22,000 a month above that. Security work, compliance work, and building the product add scope. The first 30 to 60 days are heavy assessment work.
What is not included in a fractional CTO fee?
Ask whether security audits, cloud bills, and specialist contractors sit inside the fee. Ask who owns the code and the cloud accounts when the work ends. Get both answers in the contract. Fraction’s $7,500 teardown is a separate fixed fee, not a line inside every retainer.
Shortlist fractional CTOs
Name the hours and the work first. Then set the quote next to the figures above. Shortlist fractional CTOs.
