Fractional CFO vs controller vs bookkeeper
A bookkeeper records transactions. A controller closes the books and owns accuracy and controls. A fractional CFO owns the forward view: cash, forecast, pricing, fundraising, and the numbers a founder steers by. Most companies hold all three roles at some size; the CFO seat is the one most often hired fractionally. Listed Fractional lists fractional CFOs; it lists no controllers or bookkeepers.

What a bookkeeper owns
The record. Every transaction categorised, every account reconciled, every invoice and bill in the system on time. A bookkeeper makes the month true.
Hire one first. Without a clean record, nobody above them can do their job at their rate.
What a controller owns
Accuracy and controls. The controller closes the month, produces statements you can hand to a bank, owns compliance and tax filings, and sets the approval rules that stop money leaking.
A controller looks backward with authority. They tell you what happened and whether you can trust the number.
What a fractional CFO owns
The decision. Cash forecast, pricing, gross margin by client or product, hiring plan against revenue, debt and fundraising, and the board or lender conversation.
A fractional CFO does this a few days a month, on retainer, without a full-time seat. They look forward. When the books are clean but the decisions are not, this is the seat.
Where they overlap
Small companies often buy two of the three in one engagement. A practice that sells "books plus CFO" is bundling the bookkeeper and the CFO and may or may not include the controller's close. Ask which of the three jobs is inside the fee.
The failure mode is hiring a CFO onto messy books. They spend CFO hours doing controller work at CFO rates. Hire in order: record, then accuracy, then decision.
