Fractional CTOs
Fractional CTOs
This page lists 58 named fractional CTOs. You find one by reading who they serve, shortlisting a few, and opening their practice site. Listed Fractional does not match, rank, or sell quotes. The work of choosing stays with you.
A fractional CTO runs the technology seat part-time: architecture, build-vs-buy, hiring the first eng leaders, and the roadmap a non-technical founder cannot own alone. They sit on your side of the table. A staff-aug or rent-a-dev shop sells capacity. A full-time CTO is the same seat at a full-time cost. Founders hire fractional when the product is real but the tech leadership seat is not. The on-page FAQ covers agency vs co-founder.
58 rows. Each row's facts come from the operator's public site. On the CTO who-they-serve lines, 35 name founders or startups. A search for fractional CTO companies is a list of named operators with a practice URL. A practice is a company. The row is a person. This is not a ranked companies list.
A to Z is not rank. Unclaimed rows show five facts only: name, seat, practice URL, geo, and who they serve. Filter chips are a text match on the published line, not a second ranking. Shortlist two or three in this browser, then open each practice site.
No photos, email, phone, or biographies until an operator claims the row. A claim does not reorder the list. Claim and takedown have equal standing. Claim · Takedown.

What is a fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who holds the CTO seat part-time. They make the technical decisions a non-technical founder can't make alone: what to build, what to buy, how the system is put together, and who to hire to build it. They're on your side of the table. A dev agency or staff-augmentation firm sells developer hours. A fractional CTO decides what those hours should go to and checks the work. Companies bring one in when the product is real but nobody senior owns the technology.
What they usually own
- Architecture and build-versus-buy decisions
- The technical roadmap, set to the business plan
- Hiring the first engineers or engineering leads
- Vendor and agency oversight
- The technical story for investors and due diligence
What they usually don't do
- Write most of the code (some do, so check the practice site)
- Supply a development team (that's an agency or staff-aug firm)
- Take equity and stay full-time (that's a technical co-founder)

Before you reach out
- On the practice site, look for shipped things: products named, systems described, decisions explained. A CTO page with no artifacts is a résumé, not a practice.
- Read the "who they serve" line for stage and domain. "Pre-seed through Series B" and "healthtech, HIPAA" are both filters. Use them like filters, not like decoration.
Questions founders ask before hiring this seat
What is a fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who holds the CTO seat part-time. They decide what to build, what to buy, how the system fits together, and who to hire. A dev agency sells capacity. The fractional CTO decides what that capacity should do. When you need that judgment every day, the same seat becomes a full-time hire.
What does a fractional CTO do for a non-technical founder?
They translate. You describe the business; they choose the stack, scope the first build, hire or oversee the developers, and tell you when a vendor is selling you a problem. They also guard against the two expensive mistakes: building too much too early, and building on something that cannot grow. Rows here name that exact buyer: non-technical founders and seed-stage startups.
Fractional CTO vs dev agency vs technical co-founder?
A dev agency builds what you specify and bills for it. A technical co-founder owns equity and stays. A fractional CTO sits between the two: senior judgment for a monthly fee, no equity, and no incentive to bill more hours. Hire the agency to build, the fractional CTO to decide what to build, and the co-founder when you find one worth the equity.
How is this list sourced?
Every listing starts at the operator's own site. We record five facts. If a fact is wrong, the takedown page fixes it. How every listing is sourced: /about#method.
Which CTO listings are claimed?
4 of 58 CTO listings are claimed; 54 remain unclaimed. Across the site, 9 of 397 listings are claimed; 388 remain unclaimed. Until verified, the listing shows five facts collected from the operator's public site. When an operator claims a listing, the label changes to Claimed with the month. The row does not move.
Is this a list of the "best" fractional CTO companies?
No. Rows are alphabetical. Position is not rank. A companies query here is a named operator plus a practice URL, not a ranked companies list.
Fractional CTO vs a full-time CTO: which one is this?
This page lists fractional CTOs: the same seat, a set number of days a month. A full-time hire is a different job. SuperHired appears on this site only as a labeled house ad for that different job. It does not place the CTOs listed here.
